33 of 34 girls sponsored with their high school fees met at Nikumbuke Center in LungaLunga the last Friday of August.
It was their last day of the summer break. Now there is three month school period before a longer break over Christmas. Next time they will meet in LungaLunga is on December 29th.
The girls come from the villages of LungaLunga, Perani and Godo, and together with them came their mothers. Three mothers also gave good advise to the girls, telling them how important it is to complete their education and to do their best. This was also the theme of Bendettahs own speech to the girls.
“I just reminded them about studying hard and that they have to obey their teachers and parents” Bendettah says.
Nurse Josephine encouraged the girls to leave their phones at home to study better.
One of the former highschool girls, Naomi Kavata, also attended the meeting and talked to the girls.
“Just being in a good school doesn’t mean you will do well. You have to work hard” she told the girls.
Two girls from the program have changed schools this last semester because of health problems.
At the end of the meeting all the girls also wrote letters to their sponsors to show their appreciation.
Next year we will extend the number of girls who are receiving scholarships to include girls from all the villages that are a part of Nikumbuke. This means we have to look for new sponsors, at the same time as we hope to keep the old ones.
